Have you been wondering, what the deal is with legs up the wall? 🤔
5 - 10 minutes of popping legs up the wall is one of our favourite bedtime rituals to support a good night's sleep. A lot of you have been asking what it is and how it works.
It's exactly what it sounds like—scoot your butt right up against the wall, and stick your legs up. Easy! Ideally, stay in this position for 5 - 10 minutes. The relaxing powers of legs up the wall are boosted if you breathe diaphragmatically—deep belly breathing—at the same time.
And how does it work?
When your legs are higher than your heart, your body gets the message that you are safe, and it can down-regulate the nervous system. Essentially what this means is that you can get out of 'fight or flight' mode, and into 'rest and digest' mode.
If you want to experiment and see how it affects your body, take your resting heart rate before and after. See what happens!
