Recent Research
Omega-3 Fatty Acids Reduce In Vivo Oxidant Stress
Reference:Â Â Â "The omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA decrease plasma F(2)-isoprostanes: Results from two placebo-controlled interventions," Mas E, Woodman RJ, et al, Free Radic Res, 2010 June 14; [Epub ahead of print]. (Address: School of Medicine and Pharmacology, Royal Perth Hospital Unit, University of Western Australia, Perth, WA 6000, Australia).
Summary:Â Â Â In this study involving 2 trials, one involving overweight, dyslipidemic men and the other involving treated hypertensive Type 2 diabetics, supplementation with 4 g/d EPA and DHA was found to significantly reduce post-intervention plasma F(2)-IsoPs (EPA by 24% and DHA by 14% in study A; EPA by 19% and DHA by 23% in study B), demonstrating that "EPA and DHA reduce in vivo oxidant stress as measured in human plasma and urine."
Higher Intake of Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Reduce Risk of Distal Large Bowel Cancer
ÂReference:Â Â Â "Intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids and distal large bowel cancer risk in whites and African Americans," Kim S, Sandler RS, et al, Am J Epidemiol, 2010; 171(9): 969-79. (Address: Epidemiology Branch, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, P.O. Box 12233, MD A3-05, 111 T. W. Alexander Drive, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709, USA. Summary:Â Â Â In a population-based, case-control study of 1,503 white (716 cases; 787 controls) and 369 African American (213 cases; 156 controls) adults, results indicate that dietary intake of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) may be inversely associated with risk of distal large bowel cancer. Using logistic regression, increased intake of PUFAs was associated with a reduced risk of distal large bowel cancer in whites alone, where the highest quartile of intake was associated with a 51% reduced risk of distal large bowel cancer. Thus, the authors conclude, "Study results support the hypothesis that long-chain omega-3 PUFAs have beneficial effects in colorectal carcinogenesis. Whether or not the possible benefit of long-chain omega-3 PUFAs varies by race warrants further evaluation."
